NUID is leading the way in conservation efforts and is pushing the boundaries in all areas of our operations. We have numerous ongoing projects to upgrade the NUID distribution system, including a $39 million pipeline installation and funding for a $76,000 cloud seeding study. For more information on our current projects, please visit the following link.

Active Projects

Here are just some of NUID's active projects, all of which are funded by Local, State, and Federal grant dollars.

 Lateral 43 Piping Project

See Lateral 43 Piping Project for information and pictures about the PL566 Lateral 43 Pipeline project. Segment 2 of Phase 1 was completed in Winter 2025. The Dictrict will be taking 1 year off from consturction to focus on other projects on the Dsitrict; we plan to continue piping  Segment 3 in Fall of 2027.

64-4-2 Piping Project

The 64-4-2 pipeline at the North end of the District has been well overdue for repairs and replacement for a long time. Positioned atop a challenging layer of high-density basalt, the pipeline was not buried to a proper depth during its construction so many years ago. As a result, even the relatively low vehicle traffic which runs the easement atop the pipeline was enough to cause early breakages and cracks. For years, the pipeline has leaked a great deal, reducing the District’s water efficiency tally. The new pipeline is going during the Fall of 2025, and will be operational in Spring 2026.

Main Canal Lining at Juniper Butte

A stretch of the main canal at the Northern base of Juniper Butte near Feather Drive has seen a great deal of seepage lost over the years. This seepage loss is not in line with the District's water efficiency goals, and as such we have sought funding to line this section of the main canal using a geomembrane. Construction is scheduled for November 2025, Liner Engineering and Quality Control plans are complete, and this project is funded through Congressionally Directed Spending Request (CDS), OWEB grant, and District in-kind services.

58-11 Ramp Flume Installation

The District secured Federal funding from the US Bureau of Reclamation to install a new steel ramp flume at the terminus of the 58-11 pipeline, which was constructed in 2014-16 and is located the North East section of the District. The ramp flume is intended to measure and collect realtime, 24hour flow data to help improve operations on the pipeline. This site is particularly worthy of additional water efficiency efforts due to the natural Sagebrush Creek drainage, which is a tributary of the Deschutes River. Much attention has been paid to this region in years past by the Soil an Water Conservation District, ODA, and Dept. of Environmental Quality, and will be receiving a renewed investment resources by NRCS as a new SIA (Strategic Implementation Area) will include Sagebrush Creek in its focus area. As such, it is more critical that the District optimize its water conveyance efficiency on 58-11 to remain in good standing with our basin partner agencies.

Bend Fish Screen Replacement

The District plans to update the fish screens at the NUID Main Canal intake, located on the mainstem Deschutes River, to comply with state and federal fishery screening requirements. NUID's approach is to remove the existing screens and other related components at the canal intake and replace them with new screens and components that comply with state and federal fish screen requirements. This project has been in the making for over a decade, and the District finally has received the funding to undertake the project. The first phase will occur in winter of 2025/26 where the contractor will lay the ground work for the main phase construction, which will take place in Winter 2026/27.
